— TNT Designs Events will participate in a competition to plan a wedding with a budget of just $15,000. One of ten teams of wedding vendors, Twila Moorman Hunt, along with LaMont Johnson, Terry Godfrey, Anton Dickerson, and Eric K. Pickens will reveal their elegant, yet economical, wedding packages to brides, grooms and their families and friends at the Not-So-Big Wedding Boutique on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at Rockwood Manor in Potomac. The event is FREE to the public.

The Bridal Box team package includes the cost of a ceremony and reception for 65 guests with catering by Classic Cuisine Catering, floral arrangements by Joyous Creations Floral Design, music by The Punch Production, photography Images Studio, event planning by TNT Designs Events and the rental of Rockwood Manor, one of Montgomery Parks event centers.

TNT Designs Events is looking forward to participating in this event.

“The ‘not-so-big’ wedding is the new reality for many brides and grooms as the effects of the recession continue to play out,” said Laura Gosse, marketing specialist for the Montgomery County Department of Parks event centers. “But small doesn’t have to mean plain. The challenge teams’ wedding displays will show couples how they can have a wedding day to remember—without breaking the bank.”

The boutique will also feature a panel moderated by Ellen McCarthy of The Washington Post’s wedding section. Panelists will include brides and newlyweds who have successfully planned weddings under $15,000. In addition, Deb McCoy, wedding planner and author of “I Do...: How To Have the Elegant Wedding of Your Dreams for $15,000 or Less!” and Lynn Young, author of “Let’s Elope,” will take part in the “wedding-wisdom” talks.

At the Not-So-Big Wedding Boutique, St. Anthony’s Bridal, a local non-profit, whose mission is to help people have an affordable wedding, will also be showing and selling new and once-worn designer wedding gowns for $150.

The Not-So-Big Wedding Boutique will be held from 12 noon to 5 pm at Rockwood Manor, 11001 MacArthur Boulevard, Potomac, MD 20854.

Spina Bifida Association Holds Groundbreaking First World Congress
On Spina Bifida Research and Care

Orlando, Florida - The Spina Bifida Association (SBA) recently concluded the First World Congress on Spina Bifida Research and Care in Orlando, Florida. This international event brought together over 350 clinicians, medical professionals, and researchers in the area of Spina Bifida to discuss the future of care for this challenging and complex birth defect.

Anchored by keynote sessions delivered in each of the eight major disciplines involved in Spina Bifida, the Congress was highlighted by breakout sessions in which the work of over 150 scientists was presented.

“To date, very little research has been conducted on the many components of this complex birth defect. Recognizing this, SBA established this event so that work that is being conducted could be furthered and glaring necessities in the Spina Bifida research landscape could be recognized and addressed,” stated Joseph Giffels, SBA’s Research Director.

One of the most potentially impactful findings presented during the three-day Congress was a revised figure on the number of Americans living with one of the various forms of Spina Bifida. Preliminary findings from a study conducted at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicated that instead of the 70,000 figure which has been widely used, the actual number is closer to 166,000 living in this country with this challenging birth defect.

“While further quantitative evaluation needs to be done to support this finding, this research clearly demonstrates the prevailing need for more work to be done in understanding and managing Spina Bifida and its related conditions,” stated Giffels.

Sponsored in part by the CDC, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the First World Congress also featured famed journalist Judy Woodruff delivering the Hal Pote Memorial Lecture, named for the founding President of the Spina Bifida Foundation who passed away in 2007. Woodruff, the mother of a son living with Spina Bifida, addressed the need for further funding to support research efforts as well as offered insight into the impact public policy development could make on these challenges.
Information about the First World Congress on Spina Bifida Research and Care, including abstracts for the majority of work presented, can be found on the event Web site at

The Spina Bifida Association is the nation’s only national voluntary health agency dedicated to serving the needs of the Spina Bifida Community. Its programs give hope and strength to more than 250,000 people whose lives are touched by this disabling birth defect. One of the SBA’s most vital functions is to communicate to the 65 million women of childbearing age the importance of daily folic acid intake to reduce the risk of neural tube defects such as Spina Bifida. The ABC Guide for the "Bride-to-be"

Be Available – Decide on at least three possible dates to have your dream wedding.

Be Blissful – It’s your day to shine.

Be Careful – Don’t wear too much make-up. It could interfere with the photography. You want your smile captured in the most beautiful way.

Be Decisive – In choosing your bridal party, just because you know someone doesn't mean they have to be "in" the wedding. You do have a guest list.

Be Elegant – Style is important. Pick one of your own or that works for you.

Be Flexible – Sometimes a vendor that the bride wants for her wedding is not available for her special day. If the vendor is anm essentail part of the wedding, consider changing the date.

Be Graceful – Take your time to walk down the aisle and smile.

Be Happy – This is your lifetime decision.

Be Illustrious – Make this a memorable occasion for all.

Be Joyous – Enjoy your day!

Be Keen – Know where to cut your cost on the non-essential details of the wedding.

Be Loving – Love your new family.

Be Magnificent – Magic happens when you least expect it.

Be Nearby – Plan to have multiple contact numbers. You may need to be reached in the case of an emergency.

Be OrganizedTNT Designs Events is always available to help you in this area.

Be Prepared – Sometimes things happen; If the cake doesn’t arrive on time...just breathe.

Be acQuainted – Get to know the Groom and his family

Be Registered – The most common question people ask when you get engaged is “where are you registered” or “where can I find your bridal registry”. So don’t forget to make a REGISTRY.

Be Sociable – Thank everyone for their love and support.

Be on TIME – Do not make your guests wait on you to arrive.

Be Understanding – Everyone, even your mother, may not like the colors you choose for your wedding.

Be Victorious – The day will end in 8-10 hours, but the moments last a lifetime.

Be Willing
– You cannot invite EVERYBODY who knew you since you were 2, to your reception. Stick to a BUDGET!!!

Be eXquisite – Your style is important, whether traditional or contemporary

My Business Inspiration

The inspiration behind TNT Designs Events is my Grandma, Mae B. Callis. Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur just like her.

The first beginnings were when I would visit her during our school breaks in Freeman, Virginia. (It was a big thing to say we were her grandchildren from Maryland) She would tell me the stories of her getting her license and working in the salon. She told me about all her family members that were also beauticians, especially her baby sister Laura. She would teach me about hairstyling, let me practice “pin-curling” her hair and hold the marcel irons and pressing comb. And even put me up on her kitchen counter and wash my hair and press my hair.

So as I got older, I thought what a great tribute to her would be to own a beauty salon and name the salon after her. It would have been named “Maebelle’s Unique Boutique”. Yes, I know that it’s not the most appealing name, but hey, it was for her.

Since that idea…I have elevated to newer heights and experiences. TNT Designs Events has become a premiere event planning and scrapbooking company located in the Prince George’s County, Maryland area.

It still remains that my Grandma is the inspiration and driving force behind TNT.

It is unfortunate that she is no longer here on earth with us to see what her granddaughter has accomplished. She is missed dearly.

Grandma -

When we think of you we think of love and strength.
We were truly blessed to have you as our grandmother.
You laid the foundation for our family.
You taught us when life gets hard to get down on our knees and pray.
You showed us that we could always rely on family.
Your spirit will forever be in our presence.
Your strength and grace will forever be remembered.
We will love you always.

Your Grandchildren
